Qualifications Explained
A wide range of terminology is used to describe courses currently available. The easiest way to explain them is using Guided Learning Hours (GLH) – the approximate number of taught hours required for the qualification.
Level 2
- Technical Award = 120 GLH. This is for learners at KS4, Years 10 and 11, age 14-16.
- Diploma = 360 GLH. This would form the substantive part of the learner’s studies. It could also be studied alongside other programmes over a one-year course of study.
Level 3
- Advanced Technical Certificate = 360 GLH. This is equivalent to one A level in size and would form the bulk of a one-year course of study.
- Advanced Technical Diploma = 540 GLH. This is equivalent to 1½ A levels in size and would form an entire one-year study programme.
- Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (720) = 720 GLH. This is equivalent to two A levels in size and would form the bulk of a two-year course of study.
- Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080) = 1,080 GLH. This is equivalent to three A levels in size and would form an entire two-year study programme.
T Level
- 1320-1400 GLH depending on OS. This is equivalent to three A levels and would form an entire two-year study programme.
