Qualifications Explained
Qualifications Explained
A wide range of terminology is used to describe courses currently available. The easiest way to explain them is using Guided Learning Hours (GLH) – the approximate number of taught hours required for the qualification.
Level 2
- Certificate = 180 GLH. This would be studied alongside other programmes such as vocational qualifications or A levels over a one-year course of study.
- Diploma = 360 GLH. This would form the substantive part of the learner’s studies. It could also be studied alongside other programmes over a one-year course of study.
Level 3
- Certificate = 180 GLH. This is the equivalent to one AS level and would be studied alongside other programmes over the course of a year.
- Extended Certificate = 360 GLH. This is equivalent to one A level and would form the bulk of a one-year course of study.
- Foundation Diploma = 540 GLH. This is equivalent to 1½ A levels and would form an entire one-year study programme.
- Diploma = 720 GLH. This is equivalent to two A levels and would form the bulk of a two-year course of study.
- Extended Diploma = 1,080 GLH. This is equivalent to three A levels and would form an entire two-year study programme.
